sand castle contestEveryone’s favorite summer contest has a new date and location! This year marks the competition’s 38th year, and instead of taking place on its usual August date, the festivities have been postponed to Saturday, September 10.

Whether you plan on spending the day building your own sandcastle masterpiece or are just interested in walking around to take in all the one-of-a-kind sand art, this day at the beach is nothing but fun!

This year’s contest will be held on the beach between Brooklyn Avenue and Hickman Street. Participants are divided into four divisions (Business, Adult, Child 7-14, and Child 6 & under) and prizes will be awarded as follows:

  • Judge’s Top 10: Adult and Child 7-14 divisions
  • Judge’s Favorite: Business division
  • Special Awards for all participants in the Child 6 & under division
  • People’s Choice Award: Adult and Child 7-14 divisions

Not sure you have what it takes to create a winning sand sculpture? Start off your weekend with sand sculpting artist Darrell O’Connor. He will be hosting a “How To” class on the beach at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 9. O’Connor will also be on the beach throughout Saturday’s big event, building a community sculpture with your help.

Sandcastle contest rules can be found here. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and judging takes place at 3 p.m., giving you and your family plenty of time to craft your sandcastle masterpiece.
