Take the Polar Plunge to Support Special Olympics Delaware

group running into oceanAre you looking to start the New Year off with a fun-filled family vacation? We recommend heading to The Avenue and taking part in the 25th Annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge on Sunday, February 7, 2016. The event will benefit Special Olympics Delaware and the group is hoping to reach 3,700 participants this year; one for every athlete they serve.

Not sure you’re ready to jump into the cold Atlantic Ocean this season? There are plenty of other fun family events for you to get involved in throughout the first weekend of February. Most of the festivities take place on Saturday, February 6, including the Ice Sculpting Competition, Chili Tasting Contest and more. Here is a rundown of our favorite Polar Plunge activities for you to take part in:

Ice Sculpting Competition

In keeping with the weekend’s frigid theme, an ice sculpting competition will take place on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Head down to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand and watch in awe as the ice sculptors carve away at their blocks. Masterpieces will form before your eyes and judging will take place at 12:30 p.m.

5K Run to the Plunge

Instead of jumping into the icy water this year, support the Polar Plunge by taking part in the 5K Run to the Plunge. Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate, whether they prefer to walk or run. Registration costs $20 presale and $25 on the morning of the event. The race starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, so lace up your sneakers and sign up here to help raise money for Special Olympics Delaware.

Restaurant Chili Tasting Contest

After an afternoon of exciting outdoor activities, we recommend warming up by participating in the Restaurant Chili Contest. Held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., you can vote for the best overall, most unique, best “hot” and best vegetarian chili. To participate, all you have to do is pick up a $5 ballot and visit at least five of the competing restaurants in Rehoboth Beach to sample from their pot. Not only do you get to try some of our town’s tastiest chili, but you will have the chance to see all the shops and restaurants that make Rehoboth Beach such a fun and unique place to visit.

After the array of Saturday activities, all that’s left to do is take the plunge and support Special Olympics Delaware. Sign up for the polar plunge here, and then book your stay with The Avenue. We look forward to your visit!
