13 Unwritten Rules to Know Before Visiting Rehoboth Beach

Every beach town has its quirks — those little unwritten rules that locals and seasoned visitors know by heart. At The Avenue Inn & Spa, we love sharing those insider tips that help our guests feel like part of the Rehoboth Beach family from the moment they arrive. So, before you pack your bags, here are 13 unwritten rules of Rehoboth Beach to keep in mind — part etiquette, part practical wisdom, and part local charm.
  1. Small Shade Only

Leave the big tents at home. On Rehoboth’s beach, only small umbrellas and tiny baby tents (3′ × 3′ × 4′ max) are allowed. Cabanas and large tents block the lifeguard view of the water, so they are not permitted.

  1. Smoke-Free Zones Mean Fresher Air

The beach, dunes, boardwalk, parks, and playgrounds are smoke-free – and so are we! It keeps the air fresh for everyone — and trust us, ocean breezes smell better without smoke.

  1. Shoes for the Boardwalk

The boardwalk is iconic, but it gets crowded. Flip-flops work for the sand, but pack comfy shoes if you plan to stroll the mile-long stretch (and save yourself from blisters).

  1. Parking = Strategy

In summer, parking is an Olympic sport. Arrive early, download the ParkMobile app, and know that a little walk often means less stress. And remember, Parking Meter season is May 15 thru September 15.

  1. Follow the Lifeguards

Red flags mean rough surf. Swim where the lifeguards are on duty and respect their calls — they know the ocean better than anyone. Lifeguards are on duty from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend thru the end of September.  Beyond that, you swim at your own risk!

  1. Guard Your French Fries

Feed a seagull once, and you’ll have 20 new feathered friends. Keep your food covered, and maybe save the funnel cake for a boardwalk bench instead of the sand.

  1. Evenings Are for Unwinding

By day, Rehoboth buzzes with beach energy. By night, it shifts to a laid-back vibe. Save the loud music for Purple Parrot karaoke — and enjoy the evening breezes, not noise complaints.

  1. Protect the Dunes

Stay on marked crossings. Dunes aren’t just pretty backdrops — they’re critical for protecting the shoreline. A little respect keeps them thriving.

  1. Layers Are Your Friend

Sunny days can flip into cool, breezy evenings. A light sweater, wrap, or windbreaker ensures you’re comfortable when the temperature dips.

  1. Know the Season

Summer means full swing — Funland, shops, and late-night boardwalk treats. Off-season can be quieter, with shorter hours, so plan accordingly. (The reward: fewer crowds!)

  1. Free Beach, Paid Parks

Rehoboth Beach itself is free to access. But if you head to nearby Cape Henlopen or Delaware Seashore State Park, bring a little cash for entry fees.

  1. Expect Lines for the Classics

Fisher’s Popcorn, Thrasher’s Fries (don’t ask for ketchup!), Gus and Gus Sandwiches, Dolles, funnel cakes, saltwater taffy — they’re worth the wait. Just plan your cravings around the peak evening rush.

  1. Leave No Trace

Carry out what you carry in. Clean up after yourself, recycle when you can, and keep Rehoboth Beach as beautiful as you found it.
