There’s no doubt about it – it’s been one very cold winter! When it comes to the annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge however, a little bit of freezing water is nothing! Now in its 24th year, the plunge takes place every first Sunday of the month from November to March – except for January, when the plunge is held on New Year’s Day. Sure the Atlantic Ocean may not currently offer the comfortable temperatures that most visitors to Rehoboth Beach enjoy during the summer months, but knowing that it’s all for a great cause makes it totally worth it!
Last year’s event managed to raise a whopping $725,000 for the Special Olympics Delaware, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the number only continues to grow from this year to the next. Want to get involved but not sure what involved? Here are a few of the details:
For starters a polar plunge is exactly what it sounds like; a group of kind-hearted, daring people willingly run into the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you choose to participate as an individual or on a team, you may consider downloading a pledge sheet. Though you are not required to turn in the sheet, it’s a great way to keep track of those who have sponsored you and for how much. You can even create your own fundraising page on Firstgiving.com to promote on social media and gain supporters!
Once you’ve taken the plunge and dried yourself off, head on over to the Convention Center for the Apres Plunge Party! There will be tons of pizza and chili from Nicola’s, delicious cookies and live music from Greg Mack and his Polar Bear Band! Those who have taken the plunge gain free admission, whilst family, friends and supporters can join in the fun for just $5.
The sting of the freezing water will only last for a few seconds, but the money and awareness raised for Special Olympics Delaware will have a much longer lifespan.
So what do you say? Will you join us in Rehoboth Beach for the Polar Plunge on February 1st? From everyone at Avenue Inn & Spa, we truly hope to see you soon!
